Searches in the cabinets of certain psychiatrists in Argeș and Bucharest Romania

The offices of some psychiatrists are targeted, accused of demanding bribes from patients for the issuance of documents regarding disability status.

Prosecutors from the Criminal and Forensic Investigations Section of the Prosecutor’s Office at the High Court of Cassation and Justice are conducting searches in several locations in Argeș county and the city of Bucharest.

The offices of some psychiatrists are targeted, accused of demanding bribes from patients for the issuance of documents regarding disability status.

Prosecutors are investigating a “criminal case for the purpose of committing crimes of corruption, bribery, abuse of power, intellectual forgery, use of forgery and deception committed by psychiatric specialists” , according to a statement from prosecutors.

“In this way, the doctors proceeded to the fictitious hospitalization of the interested persons, to whom they issued, in exchange for a few sums of money (about 500 lei for each hospitalization), medical documents confirming the inclusion in the degree disability, when in reality the beneficiaries have not suffered from the respective ailments, causing damage to the National Single Fund for Social Welfare and Sickness (FNUASS), both by the unjustified expenditure of the sums allocated to hospitalization, that by the fact that the recipients of the unrealistic diagnoses received a disability pension in an abusive way”, argue the prosecutors.

From the research carried out so far, it appears that between April and June 2015 alone, nearly 300 people have benefited from fictitious hospitalization.
