Simona Halep can prove her innocence. What the tennis player needs to do to show she didn’t dope – Event of the day

Simona Halep has been charged with doping with roxadustat, a banned substance that is part of the EPO class. In this context, the tennis player risks a suspension of up to four years. The former number 1 of the WTA will be heard by the independent tribunal Sport Resolutions. The two Romanian lawyers of this institution explained that the athlete can invoke sabotage or food contamination.
Cristian Jura, member of the CAS anti-doping division, explained what contamination means. He also clarified what are the conditions to demonstrate that it happened without the knowledge of the athlete. “When discussing contamination, one must assume that there are many types of contamination, and any generic or speculative discussion only deepens the confusion.”

The lawyer also clarified which are the three types of contamination that Simona Halep can invoke. This concerns the contamination of food products, food supplements or contamination appearing on the anti-doping control chain. However, Jura also added that for each type of sports contamination, he needs separate evidence to prove his innocence.

“The ban may be reduced or even canceled if the two conditions stipulated by the World Anti-Doping Code are cumulatively met, namely establishing very clearly how the substance entered the body and the athlete’s lack of intention to take the banned substance to improve performance in sports,” says Cristian Jura.

If Simona Halep had not been suspended from official tennis tournaments, she could have participated with the Romanian team in the match against Hungary in the Billie Jean King Cup play-off, the former FED Cup. In this context, Romania’s non-playing captain Horia Tecau has revealed that he spoke with Halep. The athlete told her that she would not even be in the stands at Oradea, informs Digisport.ro.
